Περισσότερες από 3.000 βυζαντινές σφραγίδες έχουν ανακαλυφθεί στο έδαφος της σημερινής Βουλγαρίας. Η αναζήτηση και η τεκμηρίωσή τους ήταν ο στόχος ενός προγράμματος με τίτλο «Corpus of the Byzantine seals from Bulgaria», οι εργασίες για το οποίο διεξάγονται για περισσότερες από δύο δεκαετίες. Η έκδοση του έργου αυτού θα πραγματοποιηθεί σε διάφορα μέρη. Το «Corpus of the Byzantine Seals from Bulgaria», τόμος Ι: «Οι βυζαντινές σφραγίδες με γεωγραφικά ονόματα» εκδόθηκε το 2003. Το «Corpus of the Byzantine Seals from Bulgaria», τόμος II: «The Byzantine Seals with Family Names» βρίσκεται στο στάδιο της εκτύπωσης. Σε εξέλιξη βρίσκονται οι εργασίες για το τελευταίο μέρος «Corpus of the Byzantine Seals from Bulgaria», τόμος 3: «Seals of Byzantine institutions (secular and ecclesiastical), resident in Constantinople».
Ένας σημαντικός αριθμός αυτών των σφραγίδων σχετίζεται άμεσα ή έμμεσα με την ιστορία της Θράκης. Σε γενικές γραμμές μπορούν να χωριστούν σε δύο ομάδες:
1. Σφραγίδες με τοπωνύμια διαφόρων οικισμών και περιοχών της Θράκης.
2. Σφραγίδες που ανακαλύφθηκαν στο έδαφος της σημερινής βουλγαρικής Θράκης.
Η πρώτη ομάδα προσφέρει άμεσες πληροφορίες για το διοικητικό σύστημα (κοσμικό, στρατιωτικό και εκκλησιαστικό) της Θράκης. Οι σφραγίδες συμπληρώνουν τον κατάλογο των αξιωματούχων που ήταν υπεύθυνοι για διάφορες υπηρεσίες και ιδρύματα στην εξεταζόμενη περιοχή.
Η δεύτερη ομάδα παρέχει έμμεσες ενδείξεις. Τα σημεία ανεύρεσης των σφραγίδων ήταν κάποτε οι τόποι παραλαβής της αλληλογραφίας με την επικολλημένη σφραγίδα του συντάκτη της. Οι σφραγίδες που ανακαλύφθηκαν σε διάφορους οικισμούς μαρτυρούν τις σχέσεις τους με τις υπόλοιπες περιοχές της αυτοκρατορίας αποκαλύπτοντας διοικητικές, προσωπικές και άλλες επαφές. Αποτελούν τεκμήρια των χαρακτηριστικών ιδιοτήτων και δραστηριοτήτων της ζωής αυτών των οικισμών. Τα σύνορα μεταξύ Βουλγαρίας και Βυζαντίου κατά τον 8ο-10ο αιώνα μπορούν να προσδιοριστούν με βάση τις πληροφορίες από τις σφραγίδες που ανακαλύφθηκαν.
Οι βυζαντινές και βουλγαρικές σφραγίδες από την περιοχή αποτελούν πολύτιμες ιστορικές πηγές και μια ζωντανή μαρτυρία που επιβίωσε μέσα στους αιώνες.
More than 3,000 Byzantine seals have been discovered from the territory of modern Bulgaria. Their searching out and documentation has been the aim of a project entitled "Corpus of the Byzantine seals from Bulgaria", work on which has been carried out for more than two decades. The publication of this project will be realized in several parts. "Corpus of the Byzantine Seals from Bulgaria", volume I: "The Byzantine Seals with Geographical Names" was published in 2003. "Corpus of the Byzantine Seals from Bulgaria", volume II: "The Byzantine Seals with Family Names" is currently in the press. Still in progress is the work on the last part "Corpus of the Byzantine Seals from Bulgaria", volume 3: "Seals of Byzantine institutions (secular and ecclesiastical), resident in Constantinople".
A considerable number of these seals relate directly or indirectly to the history of Thrace. Generally they can be divided into two groups:
1. Seals with toponyms of various settlements and regions in Thrace.
2. Seals discovered from the territory of present-day Bulgarian Thrace.
The first group offers direct information on the administrative system (secular, military and ecclesiastical) of Thrace. The seals complete the list of the officials in charge of various departments and institutions in the region under examination.
The second group provides circumstantial evidence. The findspots of the seals were once the places where correspondence with the affixed seal of its author was received. The seals discovered in various settlements attest to their relationships with the remaining regions of the Empire revealing administrative, personal and other contacts. They are evidence of the characteristic features and activities of the life of these settlements. The boundaries between Bulgaria and Byzantium in the VIIIth-Xth centuries can be determined on the basis of the information from the discovered seals.
The Byzantine and Bulgarian seals from the region are valuable historical sources and a living witness that has survived through the centuries.
