PDF

About the book:
A tour of more than 200 monasteries and pilgrimage sites in Greece and Bulgaria, from the mouth of the Strymon River to Sofia, and 1,000 years of history is offered by the new guide "The Monasteries along theStrymon River and on the Rhodope Mountaini".
Through the historical, archaeological and religious wealth of the two southern Balkan countries, the reader will be able to get to know the common historical and cultural heritage of the two countries.
The reader will be able to discover the common historical and cultural context, the common tradition that unites two countries that were part of the wider Byzantine Empire. The guide, written by the archaeologists and academics Nikos Zikos, Kostas Tsouris and Cyril Pavlikianov, presents all the monasteries built in the region, including those that no longer exist and whose existence is known only from their mention in written sources.
It is divided into two parts, covering the geographical area around the Strymon River and the Rhodope Mountains.
The first part, 'Up the Strymon. From Amphipolis to Mount Vitosha in Sofia', consists of nine sections, each presenting the monasteries of a smaller geographical area, from the province of Nigrita to the province of Pernik.
The second, "Crossing Thrace. From Nestos to Evros, from the coast to the hinterland", presents in ten sections the monasteries from the region of Xanthi to the outskirts of Sofia. Mount Athos was the model for all Byzantine monasteries on both sides of the Greek-Bulgarian border, many of which were part of Athonite monasteries.
According to the authors of the guide, there are four monasteries which stand out as emblems of the common spiritual, historical and religious wealth of the Byzantine Empire and which still attract countless pilgrims today: Ikosifoinissa on Mount Paggaio (10th century), Timios Prodromos on the outskirts of Serres (13th century), Rila Monastery on the upper course of the Strymon (10th century) and Bachkovo in the foothills of the Rhodopes (11th century).
The authors of the guide have managed to balance a large amount of material, historical, architectural and visual evidence, and have produced a guide that can be used both by ordinary visitors who wish to tour the Strymon and Rhodopi regions, and by art historians looking for specific information about the monasteries in question.
