Το οπτικό υλικό που έχει συγκεντρωθεί με σκοπό την τεκμηρίωση και την ερμηνεία της μόνιμης έκθεσης του Βυζαντινού Μουσείου του Διδυμοτείκου είναι κυρίως αρχειακό ή χαρτογραφικό και προέρχεται από τα φωτογραφικά αρχεία των σημαντικότερων μουσείων της Αθήνας, ιδίως του Βυζαντινού και Χριστιανικού Μουσείου της Αθήνας, του Μουσείου Μπενάκη, του Πολεμικού Μουσείου, του Εθνικού Ιστορικού Μουσείου, των Ελληνικών Λογοτεχνικών και Ιστορικών Αρχείων (Ε.Λ.Ι.Α.), του Εκπαιδευτικού Ιδρύματος της Εθνικής Τράπεζας και του Εβραϊκού Μουσείου. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι αυτό το ανεκτίμητο υλικό περιλαμβάνει σπάνιες φωτογραφίες των αρχών του 20ού αιώνα από βυζαντινά και μεταβυζαντινά μνημεία, κυρίως από την περιοχή της Ανατολικής Θράκης (σημερινή Τουρκία), πολλές από τις οποίες δεν έχουν διασωθεί λόγω των πολέμων που μαίνονταν στην περιοχή και οδήγησαν στη μερική καταστροφή ή την ολική κατεδάφιση των περισσότερων από αυτά. Μοναδικά στοιχεία που ξεχωρίζουν είναι φωτογραφίες θρακικών πόλεων, οι οποίες τραβήχτηκαν από έμπειρους στρατιωτικούς και πολιτικούς φωτογράφους κατά την περίοδο 1920-1974. Ορισμένες από αυτές τις φωτογραφίες αφορούν σημαντικές στιγμές της σύγχρονης ιστορίας της Θράκης, ενώ άλλες αποτυπώνουν πτυχές της αρχιτεκτονικής της παράδοσης ή της καθημερινής ζωής και των δραστηριοτήτων των κατοίκων της. Το αρχειακό υλικό που συγκεντρώθηκε θα συμβάλει περαιτέρω στη «δημιουργία» ενός μόνιμου ψηφιακού φωτογραφικού αρχείου, με έδρα το Μουσείο, στόχος του οποίου θα είναι η εύκολη και άμεση πρόσβαση των σημερινών και των μελλοντικών γενεών στην ιστορία της Θράκης.

The Byzantine Museum of Didymoteichon: The interpretive material of its permanent exhibition Nikolaos Linardatos, Archaeologist (linardatosn@yahoo.gr) The visual material that has been compiled for the purpose of documenting and interpreting the permanent exhibition of the Byzantine Museum of Didymoteichon, is primarily archival or chartographic and derives from the photographic archives of the major museums of Athens, particularly the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens, the Benaki Museum, the War Museum, the National Historical Museum, the Greek Literary and Historical Archives of the Educational Foundation of the National Bank and the Jewish Museum. It is worth noting that this invaluable material includes rare early 20th – century photographs of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine monuments, mostly from the area of Eastern Thrace (modern Turkey), many of which have not been preserved due to the wars that raged in the region and resulted in the partial destruction or total demolition of most of them. Unique items that stand out are pictures of Thracian cities which were taken by experienced military and civil photographers in the period 1920-1974. Some of these pictures relate to significant moments of the modern history of Thrace, while others render aspects of its architectural tradition, or of the daily life and activities of its residents. The archival material that was collected will further contribute to the “building” of a permanent digital photographic archive, based at the Museum, the aim of which will be the easy and immediate access of present and future generations to the Thracian history.
