The battle took place on 26 September 1371 at Ormenion near the river Evros and has been called by the Slavic name of Evros, Maritsa. The most outstanding testimony about the war and the defeat of the Serbian forces by the Turks came from the athonite monk Isaiah, a distinguished scholar –writer and translator– who belonged to the circle of Uglješa and, among other things, was the catalyst for the restoration of the unity of the Churches of Serbia and Constantinople in 1375.
